As technology has grown and changed, there are more opportunities for it to be used to help children with disabilities participate in school curricula and activities. This presentation will review the laws applicable to the acquisition of Assistive Technology for special education students. Issues covered will be how to initiate a request for an assistive technology evaluation, what types of technology can be purchased through the school department, what related AT services can be provided, and how to appeal a decision by the school department to not provide AT or AT services. We will also discuss what funding sources are available for AT devices and what effect that has on where the AT can be used. Lastly we will discuss how AT’s role in the transition planning process, and student’s ongoing rights to AT.
